When we go to paint on fiberglass we must look for a paint that works well with this type of material.
But without a doubt, the fiberglass must be prepared in the same way as any other surface that we want to paint, and thus be able to achieve the best finish.
Painting on a fiberglass surface is simpler than it looks, so follow the appropriate steps to achieve the desired results.

- Sandpaper 120
- A mild soap or mineral alcohol solution
- Roller or spray gun
- Specific painting
How to paint fiberglass
1, – Sand the glass fibre very well. You must sand the surface very well, to obtain a glossy finish you can use more and more grains of sandpaper. You must sand the surface until you are satisfied when touching the surface, and something very important that you must always remember is that the more you sand the smoother the surface will be, of course it is already up to each person and their tastes.
Now you must clean the surface with a mild soap solution or mineral alcohol. Do not use turpentine to clean a fiberglass surface, wash thoroughly and then remove residue with clean water.
3. – Now choose the first coat of paint. Keep in mind that acrylic is the best choice for the first coat of paint.
4. – Now primes the fiberglass with the paint. Allow it to dry and then sandpaper, if you prefer. You can sand it with fine grain 120 grit sandpaper, you must make sure that the paint for the first coat is sufficient.
5. – We will now proceed to apply the first coat of paint. In this step I can tell you that it is up to each person, their taste or whatever finish they want to achieve on their piece of fiberglass, but really in my opinion it should be enough to apply either one or two coats of very thin paint on the surface.
To paint the surface we can use either a roller or if you are more demanding and want a much more professional finish you can use a spray gun very well, as long as you know how to use it properly. Also, if time is our biggest problem, the spray gun will help you finish the job in less time.
Fiberglass paint is widely used, especially in these two cases:
- for painting fiberglass swimming pools,
- for painting motorcycle helmets, the material of which is fibreglass,
- and for painting boats. Boats or boats made of fibreglass.
